CCOUC scholar participates in prestigious international exchange programme on climate change and humanitarian response at Brown University

CCOUC member Professor May Yeung joined 146 participants from 55 countries in the two-week annual residential programme, the Brown International Advanced Research Institute (BIARI), organised by the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University from 4 to 18 June 2016. The BIARI addresses the world’s most pressing global issues by reaching across academic, professional, and geographic boundaries to bring early-career and rising scholars together with faculty members and professionals from multiple fields.

This year’s four themes include: Climate Change and Its Impacts: Connecting Variability and Knowledge in a Global System; Humanitarian Response and Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Increasing Effectiveness and Accountability in the Age of Complex Emergencies; Ethnicity, Conflict and Inequality in Global Perspective; and Governance and Development in the Age of Globalization. Assembled by Brown University professors, each thematic section features lectures, seminars and workshops led by distinguished local and international guest faculty.

This interdisciplinary programme aims to help participants connect, identify areas of potential collaboration and implement what they have learned to create solutions to major issues. After the programme, participants will join an alumni community of over 1,000 members from 100 countries and be eligible to apply for seed funding and residency awards for projects from collaborations that are outgrowths of BIARI initiatives. The programme has brought rising stars together to foster discussion and debate, with results in the forms of global collaborations, conferences, publications and comparative research.
